SKILLS FOR RURAL WOMEN
Lack of access to economic opportunities is one of the many challenges faced by Yemeni women, which ranks last in the Gender Gap Index. Better economic outcomes rely upon possessing the right skills. The war has exacerbated gender imbalances with insecurity and an economic slowdown which shrank an already small market in the traditional society that is Yemen’s. Women can only access educational services which are likely to have been damaged or closed. Furthermore, vocational training centers that provide market-oriented skills are less present in the rural areas than in the urban centers creating an additional obstacle.
The project will establish a vocational training center managed by the Women National Committee for specialized skills building and business services to improve livelihood opportunities for widows and women-headed households. It will focus on (i) setting up the location of the vocational training center; (ii) providing sewing machines and tailoring material; and (iii) skill-building trainings in tailoring, handicrafts and toy-making.
